The Indian Olympic Association (IOA) has formally approved India’s bid to host the Commonwealth Games 2030. The decision was taken during the IOA’s Special General Meeting on Wednesday.
The development comes ahead of the August 31 deadline to submit official bids.
Ahmedabad, a major city in Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s home state, Gujarat, is most likely to be the host city for the 2030 Commonwealth Games.
“Ahmedabad is likely going to be the city to host the Commonwealth Games 2030,” news agency ANI quoted an IOA source as saying.
The official bids are expected to be submitted by 31 August, and a decision on the host city is likely to be made by the Commonwealth Sport in November later this year.
Earlier in March this year, the IOA had submitted the letter of interest for the 2030 edition of the Commonwealth Games. Later in June, a delegation led by Gujarat Sports Minister Harsh Sanghavi met officials from Commonwealth Sport in order to understand the bid framework for the 2030 Games.
Indian Commonwealth Games Association and the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports officials were also part of the delegation.
India has already hosted the Commonwealth Games 2010 in Delhi during the Manmohan Singh-led UPA government.
India also has the ambition to host the 2036 Summer Olympics, and the 2030 Commonwealth Games are crucial for making the country’s case stronger.
