A couple was allegedly denied entry at a restaurant in Delhi’s Pitampura, because they were dressed in traditional Indian attire. A video capturing the incident went viral on social media, showing the couple recounting how the restaurant manager mistreated them while allowing others inside. The person recording the video condemned the restaurant for supposedly banning Indian clothing and demanded that it be shut down immediately.
Following the uproar, Delhi Cabinet Minister Kapil Mishra took prompt notice and informed that Chief Minister Rekha Gupta had been briefed on the matter. Mishra called the incident “unacceptable” and announced that authorities had been instructed to investigate and take swift action.
In a follow-up statement, Mishra shared that the restaurant owners had agreed to drop any restrictions related to dress code and would welcome patrons in Indian attire. He also mentioned a special offer planned for Rakshabandhan, where sisters dressed in traditional Indian clothes would receive discounts.
However, restaurant owner Neeraj Aggarwal denied the allegations, explaining that the couple was denied entry because they had not made a prior reservation. He asserted that the establishment does not have any dress code policy and welcomes all customers regardless of attire.
The incident sparked widespread debate on social media, with many users calling for strict action against the restaurant despite the intervention by the Chief Minister. Some demanded that the restaurant be shut down permanently, including any of its branches, condemning what they see as an ongoing mentality of discrimination. Others urged the cancellation of the restaurant’s license as a way to send a strong message.
