Defending the Election Commission of India (ECI) against Congress MP Rahul Gandhi’s allegation that the poll body was engaging in unlawful and unfair practices to benefit the ruling BJP, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh has dared him to make public the “atom bomb proof” he has been referring to.

Speaking at an event in Patna on Saturday, the Defence Minister said Gandhi’s accusations lacked substance and were “baseless and irresponsible.”

Singh asserted that the ECI is a responsible constitutional institution and accused the Congress MP, along with other opposition leaders, of making misleading statements against it.

Gandhi, who also serves as the Leader of the Opposition (LoP) in the Lok Sabha, had recently claimed that the Congress possessed “open and shut” proof of electoral irregularities. He described the evidence as an “atom bomb” that would leave the ECI with “no place to hide” once disclosed.

“I have said ‘vote chori’ is happening, and now we have open and shut proof that the Election Commission is involved in it,” Gandhi stated.

Singh said it was inappropriate for a Leader of the Opposition to make such comments about a constitutional body responsible for upholding democracy.

Criticizing the Congress, Singh also referred to the Emergency imposed by its government in 1975, calling it a serious breach of constitutional integrity.

Meanwhile, the ECI rejected Gandhi’s “vote theft” claims, describing them as “baseless.” The Commission reiterated its commitment to conducting elections in a fair, impartial, and transparent manner.

“The Election Commission ignores such baseless allegations made on a daily basis and, despite repeated threats, urges all election officials — who are working impartially and transparently — not to be distracted by such irresponsible statements,” the ECI said in response to the charges.
