Indicating the increasing closeness between the ruling DMK and the Desiya Murpokku Dravida Kazhagam (DMDK), a former constituent of the AIADMK-led alliance, DMDK general secretary Premalatha Vijayakanth called on Chief Minister MK Stalin at his residence here on Thursday.
“It is a courtesy call to personally enquire about the health of the Chief Minister, who had returned from hospital,” Premalatha, who is DMDK general secretary, told reporters, adding “we did not talk politics.”

“We also wanted to express our gratitude to the Chief Minister for the state government’s support when the going was tough for our family. And, there is no political agenda,” she explained.
On the alliance issue, she said there is still time to take a decision and that she would launch a state-wide campaign from August 3 to rejuvenate the party.
Of late, the DMDK has been hailing Stalin’s governance, rattling the AIADMK leadership as well as the BJP.
Premalatha and the DMDK team, comprising her brother party deputy general secretary and former legislator Parthiban, were received by the Chief Minister’s wife, Durga and son, Udhayanidhi Stalin.
This meeting comes amid speculation that the DMDK might enter into the DMK-led alliance for the 2026 assembly election. Despite the party founder actor Vijayakanth’s demise, the DMDK had secured over 3 per cent vote share in the 2024 LS poll with its candidate losing to Congress candidate Manickam Tagore by a slender margin in Virudhunagar.
The DMDK, which fought the 2024 Lok Sabha poll along with the AIADMK, has not yet spelt its decision on alliance for the 2026 assembly poll, keeping both the AIADMK and the BJP guessing.
According to analysts, the DMK is keen on taking the DMDK on board to bolster its prospects, particularly in the southern districts.
Significantly, the Directorate of Information and Public Relations (DIPR) shared the pictures of Premalatha and her party colleagues with the Chief Minister and his family for wider publicity.
