The mortal remains of Rameshwar Mahto, a migrant worker from Jharkhand who died in Kuwait last month, arrived at Birsa Munda Airport in Ranchi on Thursday, following coordinated efforts by the Jharkhand government.
Mahto, a resident of Bandkharo village under Vishnugarh block in Hazaribagh district, had been employed for the past 12 years with M/s IMCO Engineering & Construction Company in Kuwait. On 15 June 2025, he passed away due to cardiac and respiratory arrest.

The process to bring back his body was initiated after his wife, Pramila Devi, submitted a formal request on 19 June to the Migrant Control Cell operating under the Labour, Employment, Training and Skill Development Department of the Jharkhand government. Acting promptly, the state control room coordinated with the Indian Embassy in Kuwait and the Protector of Emigrants, Ranchi, to facilitate repatriation.
Initially, the deceased’s family declined to accept the body without receipt of the final settlement from the employer, which led to delays. On 27 July, following continued communication, the Deputy Commissioner of Hazaribagh obtained the family’s consent, and a formal request was sent to the Indian Embassy in Kuwait.
Subsequently, the company began the necessary procedures on 28 July, and the mortal remains were successfully brought back to India on 31 July.
At Ranchi airport, the body was received by Mahto’s son, Kishore Mahto, and Vishnugarh Block Development Officer Akhilesh Kumar. The Hazaribagh district administration arranged an ambulance to transport the body to his native village for the final rites.
This repatriation marks the completion of a process carried out under the state’s migrant worker support mechanism, ensuring that the deceased’s family could receive the body after more than a month of efforts.
