Michael O’Dwyer was the Lieutenant Governor of Punjab during the Jallianwala Bagh massacre in 1919. He approved of the actions taken by Brigadier General Reginald Dyer, who ordered troops to fire on a peaceful crowd, and even defended Dyer’s actions.

PM Modi has consistently paid tribute to the revolutionary on significant occasions, including the centenary of the Jallianwala Bagh massacre in 2019, when he inaugurated a museum dedicated to Udham Singh at the Jallianwala Bagh complex.

In his monthly radio broadcast, “Mann Ki Baat,” PM Modi has previously paid tribute to Udham Singh, highlighting his sacrifice and contribution to India’s freedom struggle. On the 82nd anniversary of Udham Singh’s martyrdom, PM Modi said, “On 31st July, we pay homage to Shaheed Udham Singh Ji, who sacrificed his life for the country.”

The Prime Minister’s tribute to Udham Singh is part of a broader effort to honour India’s freedom fighters and revolutionaries. Through initiatives like “Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav,” PM Modi has encouraged citizens to participate in celebrations and events commemorating India’s 75 years of independence.
