Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla on Friday convened an all-party meeting to discuss the impasse in Parliament, which has led to repeated adjournments in both the Houses. Opposition MPs have been stalling work in the Lok Sabha over several issues, including the Bihar Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls.

At the all-party meet, Birla urged members of the Lower House to let Parliament function properly.

The debate on Operation Sindoor, slated to begin in the Lok Sabha on July 28, also came up for discussion during the all-party meeting. A total of 16 hours have been allocated for discussion on the issue in the Lok Sabha.

Earlier today, as both Houses of Parliament convened for business on day 5 of the Monsoon Session, protests and sloganeering erupted leading to multiple adjournments. The two Houses of Parliament will now convene at 11 am on Monday.

The Opposition has been demanding a discussion on the Bihar SIR exercise in Parliament alleging the electoral revision was leading to large-scale disenfranchisement. The Election Commission has rubbished the allegations.

Elections are scheduled to be held in Bihar around October-November this year.

The Lok Sabha Speaker called the all-party meeting in a bid to achieve consensus to let the House function with discussions and debates, including the Question Hour.

“Come, there will be a discussion to end the stalemate. There will also be representatives from the government. If there is disagreement, it should be expressed as per house norms,” Birla said while adjourning the House till 2 pm and stating that the “stalemate” is not good.
