The ministry of housing and urban affairs has declared Baidyabati as the cleanest city in West Bengal, following an on-the-spot survey.
On Thursday evening at Vigyan Bhavan in New Delhi, Union minister Manohar Lal Khattar, in the presence of state urban development director Jolly Choudhury and other dignitaries, presented a Certificate of Excellence to Baidyabati Municipality chairman Pintu Mahato. The award recognised Baidyabati as a “promising Swachh Shehar (clean city)” of West Bengal under the Swachh Survekshan initiative.

Chairman Mr Mahato credited the achievement to the joint efforts of ward councillors, civic body employees, and most importantly, the cooperation and awareness of the residents of Baidyabati.
A central team from the ministry visited Baidyabati in June, spending nearly 15 days assessing the city’s waste disposal, segregation, and recycling systems. Based on the survey, Baidyabati was awarded the title of the cleanest city in West Bengal.
According to the official report, Baidyabati achieved over 96 per cent coverage in door-to-door garbage collection and successfully processed approximately 85 per cent of waste by classifying it into biodegradable and non-biodegradable categories. Moreover, 83 per cent of public toilets were found to be clean, along with more than 94 per cent of residential and market areas.
Former chairman of Baidyabati Municipality and current Champdani MLA and Serampore-Hooghly district organisational president Arindam Guin stated that this recognition is the result of sustained efforts in beautification, upgradation, and cleanliness, in line with the directive of chief minister Mamata Banerjee.
