Velu Prabhakaran wasn’t your typical filmmaker. In an era when most directors played it safe, he chose to be different, and sometimes fearlessly so. His films were popular for tackling subjects that mainstream Tamil cinema often tiptoed around or avoided altogether.

His career took flight in the 1980s, a time when Tamil cinema was still cautiously experimenting with new ideas. Prabhakaran didn’t hesitate to take risks, earning both acclaim and criticism for his bold themes.
Among his notable works are ‘Nalaya Manithan’, a sci-fi thriller that broke away from standard commercial formulas, ‘Kadavul’, a daring take on atheism and religious orthodoxy, ‘Puratchikkaaran’, and ‘Kadhal Kadhai’, both of which stirred debate and discussion among cinephiles and critics alike.
Filmmakers, critics, and fans took to social media to express their grief and admiration. Director Seenu Ramasamy shared a heartfelt tribute on X (formerly Twitter), posting a photograph with Prabhakaran and referring to him as a “progressive thinker, cinematographer, and filmmaker who never shied away from speaking his mind.”
