Vikrant Bhuria, chairman, All India Adivasi Congress, addressed a press conference at the AICC headquarters, describing the incident as “bone-chilling.” He alleged that the victims were first brutally beaten, their limbs broken, and then set on fire.
“When one of the victims jumped into the village pond to save himself, he was taken out using a hook, sprinkled with petrol, and set on fire again,” Bhuria said.
The Congress leader condemned the silence of Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar over the incident, stating that the government’s indifference encourages such crimes and emboldens criminals. “It is a complete goonda raj and jungle raj in Bihar,” Bhuria remarked. He also questioned the state’s prohibition policy, pointing out that liquor bottles were found at the scene of the crime, while there is a lack of drinking water in Bihar.
Demanding a time-bound trial in a fast-track court to ensure swift justice for the victims, the Congress also demanded permanent security for the victims’ family to protect them from further harm. Party has also called for adequate financial assistance to be provided to the victims’ family.
Meanwhile, Rahul Gandhi, Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha, has taken cognizance of the incident and deputed a special team of the AICC to meet the family members of the victims. The team will investigate the incident and provide support to the family.
The National Scheduled Tribes Commission has also taken suo-motu cognizance of the incident and sought a report from the Bihar government within three days. The commission’s member, Dr. Asha Lakra, has expressed her concern over the incident and emphasized the need for swift action.
