India remained steadfast in expanding its strategic autonomy, advocating meaningful reforms in multilateral institutions, addressing the priorities of the Global South, and safeguarding its security within the framework of a rules-based international order, according to the Ministry of External Affairs’ (MEA) Annual Report 2024.
“These efforts underscored India’s commitment to shaping a more equitable and inclusive global governance framework,” the MEA stated in the report.

Indian foreign policy demonstrated vibrancy and pragmatism, yielding significant achievements that enhanced the country’s global stature and goodwill, the report noted.
“Bilateral engagements with like-minded partners were complemented by India’s proactive initiatives and leadership in plurilateral and multilateral platforms,” it added.
The MEA highlighted the third edition of the Voice of Global South Summit, hosted virtually by India under the overarching theme “An Empowered Global South for a Sustainable Future.”
Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the Heads of State/Government session, where he proposed a ‘Global Development Compact,’ a comprehensive framework aimed at promoting sustainable development across the Global South.
The compact emphasizes trade, capacity building, technology sharing, and financial support, aiming to empower Global South nations and ensure balanced, sustainable development.
Following the Leaders’ Session, the Summit included 10 Ministerial sessions, including those with Health, Youth, Commerce/Trade, and Information and Technology Ministers.
The event witnessed the participation of 173 dignitaries from 123 Global South countries, including 21 Heads of State/Government and 34 Foreign Ministers.
This was the first plurilateral summit hosted by Prime Minister Modi after securing a historic third term and the swearing-in of the new government.
“Held within the first 100 days of the new Government, the Summit reflected India’s sincerity and commitment to advancing the collective developmental journey of the Global South, and the high priority accorded by the Prime Minister to engaging with its leaders and countries,” the MEA emphasized.
