A woman allegedly died by suicide after jumping into the Hooghly river near the jetty ghat in Diamond Harbour, South 24-Parganas, on Wednesday night, triggering panic among locals, police said.

The incident occurred around 9 p.m, near the “I Love Diamond Harbour” zone, where the woman suddenly leapt into the river. Eyewitnesses reported that although several people were nearby, the woman jumped before anyone could react. She was quickly swept away by the strong tidal current. Local police and personnel from the disaster management team launched a search operation shortly after receiving the alert, but nobody has been recovered so far. The woman’s identity remains unknown, and authorities are working to determine her background and the motive behind the act. According to police sources, the search will resume on Thursday morning, with additional divers and equipment to aid recovery efforts.

Eyewitnesses stated the woman appeared alone and did not engage with anyone before the jump. Officials are also reviewing CCTV footage from the area to gather more information. This marks the latest in a series of recent water-related tragedies along the Hooghly river.
