Mahua Moitra alleges 23 Bengali migrant workers illegally detained in Odisha

Trinamool Congress (TMC) MP Mahua Moitra on Wednesday demanded the immediate release of 23 Bengali migrant workers who were allegedly being held in illegal detention in Odisha’s Jharsuguda.

In a social media post on X, the firebrand TMC leader claimed that such detentions never happened under the Naveen Patnaik-led BJD rule but have become a daily occurrence under the BJP rule.

“23 workers from Nadia being held in illegal detention in Jharsuguda. I urge @SecyChief @DGPOdisha to release immediately. Never happened in 24 years of @Naveen_Odisha & now it is daily occurrence. Do not think there is no-one to fight for these workers,” she wrote in a post.

According to reports, the Odisha police have detained these migrant workers as they lacked documents to prove their Indian citizenship. The Odisha police has also rejected the TMC’s allegations of “targeted harassment” of any particular community.

However, Moitra claimed that the 23 workers were from his constituency and they are being illegally detained with 421 other Bengali workers despite full documentation.

“23 workers from Mirzapur village Panighata GP in my constituency are being illegally detained with 421 other Bengali workers at the interrogation centre by Orient Police Station in Jharsuguda, Odisha, despite full documentation,” she said in another post.
