Trinamool Congress leader Abhishek Banerjee has strongly criticized the BJP’s alleged attempt to introduce the National Register of Citizens (NRC) in West Bengal through the backdoor.
Banerjee described the move as an “insidious attempt” to target Bengali-speaking citizens and to create fear and insecurity in the state.

In a statement posted on his WhatsApp channel, Banerjee said, “This is nothing but an insidious attempt to introduce the NRC through the backdoor in Bengal—a state where the BJP has neither the mandate nor the moral right to govern. They are targeting Bengali-speaking citizens to create fear and insecurity, and attempting to replicate Assam’s Detention Camp Model.”
Banerjee emphasized that the fight against the BJP’s alleged move is not just political but also a struggle to preserve the democratic, pluralistic, and inclusive ethos of the Constitution.
“We must not, and will not, allow the BJP’s divisive, anti-people, and authoritarian agenda to take root in Bengal. Bengal will resist. Bengal will not bow,” he asserted.
Banerjee’s remarks come amid growing concerns over the BJP’s alleged intentions to implement the NRC in West Bengal. The move has sparked fears of widespread displacement and the marginalization of Bengali-speaking citizens, particularly in light of the controversial Detention Camp Model seen in Assam.
The Trinamool Congress has been vocal in its opposition to the NRC, and Banerjee’s statement underscores the party’s commitment to resisting any attempts to implement the contentious citizenship register in Bengal.
