Darjeeling MP Raju Bista met with civil aviation minister Ram Mohan Naidu to discuss the ongoing Bagdogra Airport expansion project. During the meeting, Mr Bista requested the initiation of a daily helicopter service connecting Bagdogra, Darjeeling, Mirik, Bijanbari, and Kalimpong. He emphasised that improved air connectivity would boost tourism, particularly in rural areas, and assist locals during emergencies.
Mr Bista highlighted the region’s popularity as a tourist destination in the Eastern Himalayas, stating that helicopter services would attract high-value tourists and act as a catalyst for economic growth. The civil aviation minister assured him that his request would be prioritised and instructed officials to examine the proposal for implementation.

Additionally, the budget emphasizes tourism development, particularly homestay tourism for the region.
