The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has sought an Action Taken Report (ATR) from the Keonjhar District Collector on non-implementation of welfare and social security schemes for the residents of a village located at mineral-rich heartland.
“Over 200 impoverished families from the Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribes communities in Mangarajpur village under Sadanga Panchayat in Hatadihi block of the Keonjhar district are not only deprived of houses but also other basic amenities and bare necessities of life,” Supreme Court lawyer and human rights activist Radhakanta Tripathy stated in a petition to the NHRC.

The Keonjhar district is one of the highest royalty paying districts of the country so far as mining is concerned. But to utter dismay, the quantum of poverty, malnutrition, literacy, deprivation of bare necessities and basic amenities are concerned, the district is a picture of neglect.
The inhabitants of the district are suffering due to lack of basic human rights due to apathy, negligence and failure of the state government and district administration, the petitioner stated.
