The world-famous Rohtang Pass in Kullu district of Himachal Pradesh was thrown open for tourists on Tuesday.

The tourists will need to procure online permit to visit the  snowcapped hills located at 13,050 feet above the sea level. The government has also put a cap on the vehicles reaching the tourist site daily — 800 petrol and 400 diesel vehicles — on the orders of National Green Tribunal (NGT).

Kullu Deputy Commissioner Yunus Khan started the online permit facility for tourists costing Rs. 500 per vehicle. The district administration has also deployed traffic personnel at various places between Manali and Rohtang for smooth movement of vehicles.

“400 petrol and 200 diesel vehicles will be granted permits in the morning session from 6 a.m. to 9 a.m.  and as many will be issued between 9 a.m. and 12 noon,” the DC said.

The DC said there was facility of paying the green tax online, besides the point of sale (POS) machines have been placed at collection barriers.

“However, the vehicles bound for Lahaul-Spiti will not have to apply for online permit. They will have to pay Rs. 50 as traffic congestion fee,” he added.

The online permits for travel up to Rohtang Pass will be given on ‘first come, first serve’ basis.

Earlier, the tourists were allowed to travel only till Marhi, which is 16 km away from Manali. Rohtang Pass remains closed for vehicular traffic in winters.
