World Cup has come alive after Sri Lanka beat England, says Virender Sehwag

Chasing a below par score, England kept losing wickets at regular intervals from the beginning with Malinga wreaking havoc and bagging Sri Lanka the game.

Sri Lanka’s nail-biting win over England at Headingley, Leeds on Friday has opened up the 2019 World Cup for many teams who are in the race of making it to the semis. Former India opener Virender Sehwag feels that it has made the mega event more lively and interesting.

Taking to Twitter, Sehwag wrote: “Excellent performance from Sri Lanka to beat England. England have India, Australia and New Zealand to play with and will have to win 2 out of these 3. World Cup is alive #EngvSL (sic).

Notably, Sri Lanka edged past England by 20 runs in a close encounter. It was a vintage Lasith Malinga show which featured a four-wicket haul as Sri Lanka stunned pre-tournament favourites England at the Headingley Cricket Ground. Malinga (4 for 43) became the fourth bowler to pick 50-plus wickets in the World Cup history as Dhananjaya de Silva (3 for 32) and Isuru Udana 2/41) played the supporting role to perfection.

Thirty-five-year-old Malinga is now the second Sri Lankan after Muttiah Muralitharan (68) to join the club – with Glenn McGrath (71) and Wasim Akram (55) being the other two.

Riding on Angelo Mathews’ gritty 85 not out, Sri Lanka had reached a modest total of 232 runs in their stipulated quota of 50 overs.

Chasing a below par score, England kept losing wickets at regular intervals from the beginning with Malinga wreaking havoc and bagging Sri Lanka the game.

With the victory, Sri Lanka moved to fifth place with six points from six games while England remained at third place with eight points in their kitty from six matches.
