Perturbed by a slew of train accidents, newly appointed Railway Minister Piyush Goyal on Thursday said space technology might soon be used to make train travel safer.

“Safety in Indian Railways is a very pressing and an urgent need,” Goyal said at an event in the national capital.

“ISRO (Indian Space Research Organisation), Rail Tech and Indian Railways are looking to work together to see how we can make use of space technology to make travel safer,” he added.

On 7 September, three train derailments rocked the Railways within a span of 12 hours, three days after Goyal took charge as the new Railway Minister, leading him to order an immediate review of safety standards.

Goyal replaced Suresh Prabhu, who had offered to quit in the wake of Kalinga Utkal Express derailment on 19 August near Muzaffarnagar in Uttar Pradesh in which 22 people died and over 150 were injured.

On 23 August 23, over 100 passengers were injured when 14 coaches of the Kaifiyat Express derailed in the state’s Auraiya district after hitting a dumper.
