SC agrees to extend Aadhaar deadline till March 31, 2018

The Supreme Court on Friday gave its nod to the Centre’s proposal of extending Aadhaar linking deadline to various government schemes, as also mobile phones and bank accounts from December 31 to March 31, 2018.

Hearing a host of petitions challenging the Constitutional validity of the Aadhaar Act, the five-judge Constitution bench of Supreme Court passed the interim order and also extended the linking of Aadhaar with mobile phones.

The Centre had on Thursday offered to extend the deadline from December 31, 2017 to March 31, 2018.

The Constitution bench of the apex court had said on Thursday that the final hearing on the petitions challenging Aadhaar would commence from January 17, 2018.

The SC is hearing a batch of petitions seeking stay of various Central and state government notifications mandating the linking of Aadhaar with various schemes including taking exam by the students, availing scholarship, cremation and treatment of HIV positive patients.

The government has already issued 139 notifications mandating the linking of Unique Identification Number with various schemes including rural job guarantee, old age pensions, provident fund and the Jan Dhan Yojana.
