Travelling in the Metro last week, a colleague saw an interesting display of sibling love.

Two ladies, accompanied by three children got into the train at Rajiv Chowk and occupied the seat opposite our colleague.

As the boisterous children jostled with each other, the youngest, a girl, had her hair in disarray. At this, her older brother, around 13 years of age, held her and patiently did up her hair.

As the rest of the co-passengers watched the scene indulgently, a young lady co-passenger said it reminded her of her own brother but in a reversed role.

With a 10- year age gap, she literally mothered her younger sibling, she said. Even today, the young lady said, her brother turns to her with his problems rather than go to their mother.

It may make a sweet picture for us, but there are several young children, who are pitched into "early motherhood" as they have to look after their younger siblings. These children mostly belong to parents from the underprivileged segment of society.

Generally, both parents go out to work and leave the younger children in the care of the older siblings, usually a girl child. It's a sad reflection on our society as well as governance that adequate care is denied to children.

Generally, these care-giving children are bereft of education and form the bulk of school dropouts. Not only are these children, particularly the girls, supposed to take care of their younger siblings, they also handle a huge part of household chores, such as cleaning, washing and even cooking.

As we celebrated Mother's Day last week, one could not help but spare a thought for the little mothers across the country, who have often made a lot of sacrifices for the sake of their younger brothers and sisters.

Only, few would fete them as we did our mothers.
