‘Imran Khan fully healthy’: Adiala jail issues statement amid rumours of former Pakistan PM’s death

Former Pakistan PM Imran Khan

Amid rumours circulating on social media over the suspected death of former Pakistan Prime Minister and Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) party leader Imran Khan, the Adiala jail administration is reported to have dismissed the speculation. As per a report on the Geo TV website, the jail administration said in a statement that the former PM remains housed inside the high-security prison and is in good health.

The administration denied any deterioration in the health of the former cricketer.

Imran Khan has been in jail since 2023 over multiple cases ranging from corruption to terrorism. He was removed from power in April 2022 after losing a no-confidence motion moved by the opposition parties.

What Pakistan Defence Minister said on Imran Khan

Pakistan Defence Minister Khawaja Asif also clarified that the PTI founder was in comfort inside the prison. Asif said the former PM was receiving food that is not even available in a five-star hotel, and that there were exercise machines at his disposal.

The clarification and remarks came after the PTI demanded that the government clarify rumours circulating about the health and status of its jailed leader. The party also demanded a meeting between Imran and his family.

It may be noted that Imran’s sisters have, for weeks, been trying to meet him, but they have not been granted permission. The sisters even staged sit-ins outside the jail.

PTI issues statement on Imran Khan rumours

The PTI said in a statement on Thursday that “rumours of a despicable nature” were being spread from “Afghan media, and foreign social media accounts” regarding Imran’s health.

The party demanded that the “current government and the interior ministry immediately and clearly dismiss and clarify the rumour and immediately arrange a meeting between Imran and his family”.

“A formal and transparent statement should be issued on behalf of the state regarding the health, security and current status of Imran,” the PTI statement said further.
