Dipu Chandra Das, a young man from the Hindu community, was beaten and burned to death by a mob in the Square Masterbari area of Bhaluka upazila in Mymensingh district on 18 December, 2025. He was reportedly lynched and hanged from a tree over allegations of making derogatory remarks against the Prophet Muhammad. The 28-year-old Dipu’s mob lynching had triggered widespread violence across Bangladesh.

While the incident itself is terrible, its in-depth details would make one’s blood run cold.

Like any other day, Dipu Chandra Das left his house in Bangladesh’s Mymensingh city for work on 18 December 2025. However, the day turned dark when Dipu allegedly uttered a ‘katukti’ – Bengali for an insulting remark – against Prophet Muhammad, during a casual chat about weekend plans with some co-workers near closing time at the workplace.

Nobody knows if the allegation was true or not, as investigations are still underway, but the mob called the shots and lynched Dipu to death. Reportedly, he was dragged from his workplace, where he worked as a junior quality inspector, beaten, hauled for over a kilometre through crowded streets, and then tied to a tree on a busy highway and set alight in broad daylight.

The details above are according to the three eye-witness accounts, as quoted by Mohammed Abdullah Al-Mamun, the additional superintendent of police in Mymensingh, reports the BBC.

Mob rage captured in CCTV footage

The CCTV footage collected by police shows that Dipu had logged out of the factory half an hour after that conversation with his co-workers. However, the video shows that he came back to his workplace two hours later and was seen roaming around. Meanwhile, a mob of over several hundred had gathered outside the factory around 6 pm as the ‘rumour’ had spread around that a Hindu factory worker had insulted Prophet Muhammad. It can be seen in the CCTV footage that the mob attempted to force the gates and hurled ropes over them to climb inside.

According to an eye-witness, the mob used shovels to prise open a smaller side gate, poured into the factory, and “carried Dipu away like a wave”, at around 8 pm.

Factory workers vs police: Claims mask the real story

Factory employees claim that they had informed the police at least 45 minutes earlier. They say that some industrial police and officers had reached the spot but failed to save Dipu from the mob attack.

However, the police have a different version of the entire episode. According to police, the factory employees opened the gate and handed over Dipu to the crowd after the mob threatened to break down the gates if he was not handed over. The police statement suggests that Dipu was beaten to death outside the factory and then dragged to a nearby highway, tied with a rope to a tree, and set on fire.

After the mob-lynching incident, multiple stories have surfaced relating to Dipu’s death, but the real truth is yet to come to light.
