Tarique Rahman took the oath as a Lawmaker in the Parliament, along with other elected MPs, earlier today. The other newly elected Members of Parliament were also sworn in by Chief Election Commissioner A.M.M. Nasir Uddin at the South Plaza in Dhaka.

Amir Khasru Mahmud Chowdhury, BNP standing committee member and newly elected MP, confirmed that the oath-taking ceremony of the BNP MPs has concluded. The BNP members have taken the oath as lawmakers.

Also, Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla arrived at Dhaka earlier today to represent India at the swearing-in ceremony of Tarique Rahman as the Prime Minister of Bangladesh.

BNP returns to power

The Bangladesh Nationalist Party achieved a landmark victory in the 2026 general elections of the country, marking the party’s return to power after nearly twenty years.

With the oath-taking ceremony today, Tarique Rahman becomes the first male to hold the post in decades.

Rahman’s party won 209 of 297 elected seats in the first general election since the ouster of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina in August 2024.

The ceremony marks the end of the interim government led by Chief Adviser Mohammed Yunus, which took charge after the fall of Sheikh Hasina’s government.

In his farewell address, Yunus highlighted the government’s focus on institutional reforms and the drafting of the July Charter, which was adopted by a broad spectrum of political parties and endorsed in the recent referendum. The Charter aims to prevent the resurgence of authoritarianism and ensure stability in Bangladesh’s democratic institutions.
