Meanwhile, Taliban government spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid posted on X stating that at least 1,411 people have been killed in Kunar, the province hardest hit by the magnitude 6 earthquake.
In another post on X, he said at least 3,124 people were injured while more than 5,400 houses were destroyed.
He added, “The latest details: In the areas of Nurgal, Soki, Jaba Darah, Bish Darah, Tabor, and Asadabad in Kunar Province, the current statistics of losses caused by the earthquake are as follows: Martyrs: 1411, Injured: 3124, Destroyed homes: 5412.”
The earthquake triggered landslides in some areas, blocking roads. A few roads that were previously blocked have been reopened, and the rest will soon follow to allow access to the affected areas, according to the foreign media.
As per the Afghan Red Crescent Society, the current death toll stands at 1,124, with 3,251 injured and over 8,000 homes destroyed.
A 6.0-magnitude earthquake struck late Sunday night, causing widespread devastation in several provinces. Entire villages were flattened, with many residents trapped beneath the rubble of homes built largely from mud bricks and wood, structures too fragile to withstand the tremors.
Rescue operations have been carried out in four provinces, including Kunar. Now, efforts are being made to reach the isolated areas.
According to the USGS, the earthquake epicentre was about 27 kilometres (17 miles) from Jalalabad and struck just eight kilometres below the Earth’s surface.
The head of the Kunar Provincial Disaster Management Authority, Ehsanullah Ehsan, told AFP that “operations continued throughout the night.”

In a statement, British Foreign Secretary David Lammy said: “The news of the earthquake in Afghanistan’s Kunar Province is truly tragic.
