New York City has a new mayor, and his victory is historic. Zohran Mamdani, 34, has made history as the city’s first Muslim mayor. His campaign was impossible to miss from rallying crowds at marathons to making waves on social media. But behind the public whirlwind stood a quieter force: his wife, Rama Duwaji, the creative mind helping shape the look and feel of Mamdani’s journey to City Hall.

At 28, Rama Duwaji is an accomplished artist whose work has received praises from across the globe. Born in Houston, Texas, to a Syrian family, she spent part of her childhood in Dubai after her family moved there when she was nine. Her path in the arts took her from Virginia Commonwealth University’s School of the Arts in Qatar to its Richmond campus in the US. She later went to the prestigious School of Visual Arts in New York where she earned her master’s in illustration.

Duwaji’s artwork, often exploring the stories of Middle Eastern women, has appeared in The New Yorker, The Washington Post, BBC, Vogue, and Tate Modern.

Despite her impressive portfolio, Duwaji has mostly stayed out of the spotlight during Mamdani’s campaign. The New York Post described her as “aloof,” quietly powering the visual side of her husband’s political rise. She designed campaign logos, picked bold colours like yellow, pink, and orange, and helped create the vibrant brand that became synonymous with Mamdani’s platform.

In essence, while Zohran was on the streets and in the media, Rama was crafting the campaign’s visual heartbeat.

The couple’s love story is as modern as it is cinematic. They met on the dating app Hinge in 2021, and their bond quickly blossomed. By October 2024, they were engaged, and in December that year, they celebrated their nikah and engagement party in Dubai, on a rooftop overlooking the iconic Burj Khalifa.

Just months later, in February 2025, they held a quiet courthouse wedding in Lower Manhattan. To top it off, the pair hosted a lavish three-day wedding celebration at Mamdani’s family estate in Uganda in July blending cultures and continents in true global fashion.
