Ghosh, who won from the Kharagpur assembly constituency by a comfortable margin, was sworn in as a minister in the cabinet at the oath-taking ceremony held at Brigade Parade Ground.
According to local sources, a group of BJP workers and supporters, many of them riding motorcycles, assembled near Banerjee’s residence in Kalighat soon after the oath-taking ceremony concluded.
The ceremony marked a historic breakthrough for the BJP in a state long dominated by the Left Front and later the Trinamool Congress. Thousands of party workers gathered across Kolkata as the BJP officially assumed power in West Bengal for the first time since Independence.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi attended the grand swearing-in ceremony held at Kolkata’s Brigade Parade Ground amid massive security arrangements and the presence of senior BJP leaders, party workers and supporters from across the state.
The swearing-in ceremony has drawn several senior leaders from the BJP and the NDA. Union Ministers Rajnath Singh, JP Nadda and Dharmendra Pradhan arrived in Kolkata on Friday to attend the event.
Calling the occasion a “historic dawn” for West Bengal, Adhikari welcomed PM Modi to the “City of Joy” and described the formation of the BJP government as the fulfilment of the aspirations of the party’s ideological founders.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah along with several other top leaders of the BJP, including chief ministers of NDA-ruled states, are expected to attend the ceremony.
