In the stronghold of state minister Swapan Debnath, members of around 200 families have left the Trinamul Congress to join Humayun Kabir’s Janta United Party (JUP). This marks the second such development in the Purbasthali blocks of East Burdwan within a fortnight.
Mr Debnath said Bengal had exported meat to Qatar during the Football World Cup. In India, West Bengal is the second highest producer of meat after Uttar Pradesh with 11.9 per cent growth rate.
Three years ago, the irrigation department and the zilla parishad together had planted caged boulder stone blocks to create an artificial wall along the riverbank but Amphan destabilised that wall this year. House of one Suraj Sheikh is located barely 200 metres away from the river now.
The police had arrested five BJP cadres, including Tarok Das and his wife Abha and three others on charges of murder and they were sent to judicial custody till 11 July.
