The Supreme Court of India on Tuesday highlighted “entrenched disadvantages” in the “systemic framework” responsible for the denial of Permanent Commission (PC) to women officers in the Armed Forces, observing that their assessment was based on an underlying assumption that they would not progress far in their careers.
The apex court ruled that the modifications will have serious implications on the future batches.

A bench headed by Justice DY Chandrachud said gender discrimination cannot be permitted with woman officers in Navy after statutory bar was lifted by Centre to allow their entry in the force through policy decision in 1991 and 1998.
