The investigation, which has seen raids continue for over 24 hours at multiple real estate groups in Mohali, took a dramatic turn when bags of cash were reportedly thrown from the ninth floor of a residential building during the search. Witnesses reported seeing ₹500 notes fluttering in the air after a bag burst. The ED has confirmed the recovery of approximately ₹1 crore in cash so far.
The raids are part of an ongoing investigation into alleged illegal activities linked to Biswajit Podder, who is accused of running an organised criminal syndicate in south Kolkata. According to the ED, the network generated large amounts of illegal funds through extortion, land grabbing and unauthorised construction.
Yesterday also before leaving for Delhi, Mr Banerjee had said, “The BJP cannot digest the defeat in West Bengal so they are using the agencies to harass me and malign the Trinamul Congress. Last year, the couple had filed a case in Delhi High Court that since the case is related to West Bengal, they need not be summoned in the Capital everytime for interrogation. But the Delhi High Court dismissed the case on 11 March.
A bench headed by CJI Ranjan Gogoi has asked Karti Chidambaram to deposit a security deposit of Rs 10 crore.
The apex court also ordered Karti Chidambaram to deposit Rs 10 crore with the court if he wanted to go abroad.
The apex court had on July 23 allowed Karti Chidambaram to travel abroad with certain conditions, including that he would not open or close any bank account abroad.
