Speaking in an interview aired on Channel One on Thursday, Lavrov noted that direct talks between Moscow and Kiev resumed in May in Istanbul after several years, but no breakthrough was achieved.
During his meeting with the Russian President at the Kremlin on Thursday, Dr Jaishankar conveyed personal greetings of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the Ministry of External Affairs said on Friday.
According to reports, Jaishankar will hold talks with his Russian counterpart Sergei Lavrov on August 21.
The meeting came amid attempts by India and other friendly nations to mediate between Russia and Ukraine to bring their ongoing conflict to an end.
It is the Indian understanding, however, that the longer the conflict rages in Ukraine, not only does the humanitarian argument for Russia to back off intensify but neutrality too becomes more difficult to articulate robustly.
