As the Gulmarg leg of the sixth edition of KIWG unfolds on Monday, the Army’s story is no longer about participation.
Introduced by the Union Sports Ministry in July last year, the Khelo Bharat Niti is designed to strengthen India’s sporting ecosystem while using major events as catalysts for economic growth.
The first leg of KIWG 2026, featuring ice sports, was held in Ladakh from January 20 to 26, while Gulmarg will stage the snow sports competitions. The Indian Army will defend its overall championship title in Jammu & Kashmir.
He noted that the games are playing a crucial role in promoting winter sports, nurturing young talent and strengthening the sporting ecosystem in the region.
In the Ladakh leg of the 2025 edition, the hosts topped the medal tally, winning four gold medals out of the 13 on offer, with Tamil Nadu and Maharashtra finishing second and third respectively.
