The BJP has brought in recent Congress defectors and retained key leaders in its first Assam poll list, setting up contests in constituencies like Dispur, Bihpuria and Jorhat.
Buzz also is that some other Congress and AIUDF legislators are also preparing to shift base, including to NDA ally Asom Gana Parishad.
Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sarma announced that Borah will join the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on 22 February.
However, according to Sarma, the situation changed abruptly. “That decision was overturned after Rahul Gandhi, who was in the US at that time, made some calls,” he added.
Borah elaborated on the extensive efforts made over the past two years, high- lighting the implemented changes aimed at revitalizing the Congress's presence in Assam.
Sarma also hit out at the Congress leader's Bharat Jodo Yatra and said, "Rahul Gandhi is visiting places where there are no elections."
