Sealing hearts with a sensational four-wicket haul on debut, Sunrisers Hyderabad pacer Sakib Hussain has emerged as one of the most compelling stories of the Indian Premier League 2026 season, not only for his performance but also for the journey behind it.

The young pacer’s breakthrough moment has also brought renewed attention to an old, emotional video from his time with Kolkata Knight Riders, now widely circulating on social media, shedding light on the hardships he overcame to reach this stage.

Hailing from a modest farming family in Bihar’s Gopalganj district, Sakib’s early cricketing days were marked by financial struggles so severe that even basic gear was a luxury.

“Shoes are very expensive. Proper bowling spikes cost around Rs 10,000 to Rs 15,000. If we spend that much on shoes, then what will we eat?” Sakib had said in the resurfaced video.

His mother recalled the emotional weight of that moment and the sacrifice that followed.

“He started crying, saying, ‘Mummy, I don’t have shoes, how will I play?’ We didn’t have that kind of money. I had to sell my jewellery to somehow get him those shoes,” she said.

Despite the odds, Sakib’s progress was steady. He first entered the IPL ecosystem as a net bowler with Chennai Super Kings before being picked up by KKR ahead of the 2024 season. However, opportunities were scarce, and he did not feature in a single match during his stint with the franchise.

Grounded in his roots, Sakib spoke about the responsibilities he took on early in life.

“I’m from Bihar, and my district, Gopalganj, is about 125 km from Patna. Back home, we don’t really have much. We are farmers. My father used to do farming, but then he developed a knee problem, so I told him he shouldn’t continue anymore,” he said.

His father echoed the family’s struggles during that period.

“Now I am the one who has to earn for the family. If I were ill, even arranging a single meal became something we had to think about,” he said.

Sakib’s introduction to cricket came not through formal systems, but through local encouragement.

“There is a ground near us, so he used to go early in the morning for running. Some local coaches noticed him and told him to try cricket,” his father added.

He began with tennis-ball cricket, often travelling long distances to earn small match fees, a grind that shaped both his game and mindset.

“I used to play tennis-ball cricket, earning Rs 500, 600, 700, and sometimes even Rs 2,000 if I travelled about 150 km to play. From that point, I made up my mind that I had to pursue cricket,” Sakib said.

His talent soon translated into performances. He made his domestic T20 debut for Bihar in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy 2022–23 season, picking up 4/20 in just his second game at the age of 17. He further impressed in the Ranji Trophy 2025–26 with a six-wicket haul.

Those performances earned him an IPL contract, with Hyderabad securing his services for Rs 30 lakh ahead of the 2026 season.

He repaid that faith instantly.

Making his debut in a high-pressure chase, Sakib delivered a match-winning spell, dismissing key batters including Yashasvi Jaiswal, and breaking crucial partnerships by removing Donovan Ferreira, Jofra Archer and Ravi Bishnoi.

From a boy who once worried about affording cricket shoes to a match-winner on one of the biggest stages in the sport, Sakib Hussain’s journey is a powerful reminder of resilience, sacrifice, and unwavering belief.
