Veteran Indian cricketer Virender Sehwag on Saturday made a shocking exit from Indian Premier League (IPL) team Kings XI Punjab. The former Delhi Daredevils and KXIP batsman took to micro-blogging site Twitter to announce his exit from the club.

“All good things must come to an end and I’ve had a wonderful time at Kings 11 (sic) Punjab, for 2 seasons as a player and 3 as a mentor. My association with Kings 11 (sic) comes to an end and I am thankful for the time I have had here and wish the team all the very best for the times ahead,” Sehwag wrote on Twitter.

And now in a new development, Virender Sehwag has explained his exit.

“I’ve received a mail from the franchise stating that they won’t be needing a brand ambassador and a mentor. I was happy being part of the Kings XI Punjab team. It was their decision, so I had no role in the decision-making process. I don’t think the incident (with Preity) had anything to do with my exit. If they want to have a new mentor or a new ambassador, it is up to them,” Sehwag was quoted as saying by The Mumbai Mirror.

Virender Sehwag joined Kings XI Punjab in 2014 as a player and in 2016 joined the team’s backroom staff. Sehwag was the mentor of Punjab for three years during which the team did not do well in the cash-rich league. They finished eighth, fifth and seventh, respectively, in the last three seasons of the IPL.

Speculations about Sehwag’s future with the KXIP started doing the rounds of the media after the club appointed former New Zealand coach Mike Hesson on a two-year contract.

Hesson was appointed earlier this week as a replacement of Australian Brad Hodge.
