Former Indian cricket team director Ravi Shastri is set to return in the national cricket scene as he is planning to apply for the prestigious post of head coach.

The 55-year-old on Tuesday confirmed to a national daily that ‘he has decided to apply for the job’, claiming that he’s trying his chances amid other applicants.

However, Shastri has a strong backing of Indian captain Virat Kohli, who had a dressing room tussle with former coach Anil Kumble that led the spin legend out of the blues’ camp.

Kumble resigned from the coaching job soon after India lost to Pakistan in the ICC Champions Trophy. Following his exit, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) invited more applications. Also, there were speculations of Virender Sehwag’s elevation as the head coach.

The former India batsman was the team director from 2014 to 2016. In the absence of a head coach, Shastri guided the team to many victories, besides their semi-final appearances in the 2015 World Cup and 2016 World Twenty20.

Shockingly, Shastri had applied for the coach’s job in 2016 also, but Kumble was chosen over him.
