Former Indian women’s team coach Ramesh Powar, whose tenure ended on November 30, reapplied for the job on Tuesday. Powar said he decided to reapply for the women’s coach position after finding support from T20I skipper Harmanpreet Kaur and her deputy Smriti Mandhana.

“Yes, I have applied this evening because Smriti (Mandhana), Harmanpreet (Kaur) have supported me and I can’t let them (the girls) down by not applying,” Ramesh Powar told PTI.

During Powar’s term as India coach, the Women-in-Blue were knocked out by England in ICC Women’s T20 World Cup. After the world tournament, Powar had a fallout with ODI skipper Mithai Raj for dropping her from playing XI. The decision to drop a senior player like Raj stirred a massive controversy. Days after the semi-finals, in a mail to BCCI Rahul Johri, the 35-year-old batter accused Powar of humiliating her.

Mithali Raj went on to accuse COA member Diana Edulji also of trying to destroy her career and for being biased against her. Submitting his report on Mithali’s exclusion, Powar accused the cricketer of threatening to retire midway into the World T20 after being denied the opening slot. He also accused her of creating chaos in the team.

Following the controversy, BCCI decided not to renew Powar’s contract and invited fresh applications for the post. The women’s team is divided at the moment as Harmanpreet and Smriti want Powar to continue while Mithali is against his return.
