Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp sprung up a major surprise on Saturday, fielding the injury-prone Daniel Sturridge in place of Mohamed Salah for the Reds’ Premier League tie against Crystal Palace at Anfield.

Klopp has made a host of changes to the side that drew 3-3 with Watford on the opening weekend, bringing in Joe Gomez at right-back and Ragnar Klavan at centre-back.

Andy Robertson makes his Reds Debut and veteran James Milner plays in a three-man midfield along with captain Jordan Henderson and Georginio Wijnaldum.

Up front, Sadio Mane and Roberto Firmino will play with Sturridge up top as Liverpool look to set their poor record against Palace straight.

Klopp’s men played their Champions League game in midweek and perhaps that is why the German tactician has made the number of changes.

Crystal Palace, who lost 3-0 to Premier League new boys Huddersfield Town, have opted for a 3-4-3 formation and manager Frank de Boer will hope for an improved performance this time round.

Christian Benteke, up against his old club, leads the line for the Eagles and will have support from Andros Townsed and Ruben Loftus-Cheek in attack. A key player for the visitors will be Patrick van Aanholt, as the marauding full-back will look to expose Liverpool’s suspect defence with his raids down the flank.

Liverpool: Mignolet, Gomez, Matip, Klavan, Robertson, Henderson (c), Milner, Wijnaldum, Mane, Firmino, Sturridge.

Crystal Palace: Hennessey, Dann, Fosu-Mensah, Tomkins, Ward, Puncheon (c), van Aanholt, Milivojevic, Loftus-Cheek, Townsend and Benteke.

Match starts at 3 PM GMT/7.30 PM IST.
