Hasin Jahan’s allegations against her husband Mohammed Shami came as a rude shock for the cricketer’s fans when she accused him of domestic violence and extra-marital affairs a couple of days ago.

To substantiate her claims, Jahan had posted screenshots of Shami’s alleged WhatsApp and Facebook Messenger conversations with multiple women on her Facebook account. She also uploaded photos and phone numbers of the women. Jahan also alleged that Shami and members of his family had even tried to kill her. Now, based on her complaint, a case has also been filed against the Indian pacer at Jadavpur police station.

However, Mohammed Shami is not the first cricketer to have found himself on the wrong side of the law. Let’s take a look at five such cases involving some famous cricketers:

Shane Warne

Arguably one of the greatest spinners to have graced the game, Shane Warne was also one of the most controversial cricketers off the field. His misdemeanors with girls had been a talking point of his playing career and thereafter. In 2000, Warne was sacked as the vice-captain of Australia following revelations that he bombarded a British nurse with obscene telephone calls.  Warne admitted to having ‘dirty talk’ with Donna Wright. Thereafter, despite being married and having three kids, his sexual encounters continued, as in 2005 an English woman, Laura Sayers, accused Warne of badgering her to have sex after a night out in London. A similar controversy with stripper Angela Gallagher led to his separation with his wife Simone Warne.

South Africa’s first black Test cricketer Makhaya Ntini career looked like coming to an early end in 1999 when he was charged and then convicted of rape.  The case had caused uproar in South Africa back then. However, Ntini maintained his innocence and was acquitted on appeal. Thereafter, he successfully rebuilt his international cricket career.

In 2015, Indian cricketer Amit Mishra was arrested in Bengaluru in connection with a complaint filed by a woman for allegedly physically assaulting and abusing her in a hotel room. However, he was later released on bail. The woman in her complaint had claimed that she knew Mishra for the past three years and the incident took place in a hotel room where the cricketer was staying when he came to the city along with the Indian team for a training camp.

The very same year (2015), Bangladesh medium fast bowler Rubel Hossain, who was named in the nation’s 2015 World Cup squad, was sent behind bars over alleged charges of raping an actress. Naznin Akter Happy had lodged a complaint of ‘rape’ and a ‘false promise of marriage’ against the cricketer. The court’s decision had put a huge question mark over Hossain’s appearance in the World Cup. However, he was granted bail on grounds of national interest as the Bangladesh Cricket Board felt he was key to their team.

2012 Indian Premier League was mired in a controversy when Royal Challengers Bangalore player Luke Pomersbach was arrested for allegedly molesting an American woman and severely beating up her fiance. Following the incidence, RCB suspended Pomersbach from playing any match, till the time he was cleared of the charges. The victim had claimed that the player invited himself for some drinks with the couple and some common friends from Mumbai in their room. She alleged that she left the men alone and went to her bedroom for catching some sleep but Luke followed her and misbehaved with her and when her fiance intervened, the cricketer allegedly beat him up.
