Manchester City fans were given a reason to cheer for on Friday as the club announced that record goalscorer Sergio Ageuro has inked a one-year contract extension that will see him remain at the Etihad Stadium till 2021 at least.

“Manchester City Football Club is delighted to announce that Sergio Aguero has signed a one-year contract extension, keeping him at the Club until 2021,” the club stated.

Aguero arrived with a burgeoning reputation from Atletico Madrid for a reported figure of £38 million and 204 club goals later, it’s safe to assume the Argentine has been a bonafide hit.

Arguably considered the club’s greatest player ever, the 30-year-old is in his eight season with the Sky Blues.

Scorer of the most famous goal in the club’s history, an injury-time winner at QPR that saw them lift the 2011-12 season, the diminutive striker’s scored 25+ goals in ever season save one since his switch from the La Liga.

“I am happy for this additional year. My idea was being here for 10 years. I’ve been here for seven years, it’s going to be 10 when the contract expires,” Aguero enthused upon penning the extension.

“This was the main reason I signed. I’m very happy because they have treated my very well since the first day I got here. I’m very happy with everything that involves the Club, my teammates, the staff and the management team.”

Pep Guardiola’s arrival in the summer of 2016 had many fearing the worst as the Catalan is known to prefer strikers with a high work-rate, but Aguero remains as indispensable as ever for the Sky Blues.

“It’s true that we’ve got a lot of young talent, that in the future can make the difference. At the same time the youngsters are quite developed already, like Leroy, Raheem, Bernardo and Gabriel. There are a lot of players, that have got things to improve and learn, but being in this Club you learn and improve faster than anywhere else. We have a good team, we need to be focused and if we are at 100%, we have lots of chances to do great things.”

City haven’t had the best of weeks as they lost their UEFA Champions League opener at home to Lyon and will look to Aguero to fire them to a win when they play their Premier League tie against Cardiff City on Saturday (1930 GST).

So far, Aguero has found the back of the net five times already, including a hat-trick against Huddersfield Town in August.

City are two points off the pace in the Premier League, having secured 13 points from a maximum of 15 from five games.
