Ace Shuttlers, Treesa and Gayartri, have advanced to round 16 after a convincing win of the Malaysia Open Super 1000 badminton tournament. What came as a surprise to many was star player Srikanth and Saina’s early exit from the tournament on Tuesday.

Treesa and Gayatri, who were the bronze medalist at the Commonwealth Games held previous year, breezed past Yeung Nga Ting and Yeung Pui Lam of Hong Kong at the Axiata Arena by 21-19, 21-14.

Former world championship silver medalist Srikath has not been looking in a great touch recently. On Tuesday, the star shuttler lost 19-21, 14-21 to world No. 17 Kenta Nishimoto of Japan.

Moreover, Saina Nehwal also showed good resilience, but she lost by 12-21, 21-17, 12-21 to Han Yue of China. With early exits of Saina and Srikanth now all eyes are on the rising pair Treesa and Gayatri.

The world number 16 pair is now all set to lock horns with number 14 ranked Bulgarian sisters Gabriela Stoeva and Stefani Stoeva for the quarterfinals. India’s lone victory in the Super 1000 tournament came from the women’s doubles team of Treesa and Gayatri.

Notably, megastar shuttler and 2016 Olympics Silver Medalist PV Sindhu will be in action against Spain’s Carolina Marin in her first match on Wednesday.
