Indian shuttler Parupalli Kashyap on Thursday advanced to the quarterfinals in the men’s singles event in the ongoing Korea Open badminton tournament after registering a hard-fought win over Malaysia’s Liew Daren.

Kashyap, who is the only Indian left in the fray, defeated Daren 21-17, 11-21, 21-12 in a match that lasted almost an hour.

It is to note that on Wednesday, Kashyap defeated Lu Chia Hung of Chinese Taipei 21-16, 21-16 to emerge as the lone Indian to survive in the singles event after star shuttlers PV Sindhu, Saina Nehwal and B Sai Praneeth made first round exits.

Where Sindhu crashed out in the first round of the Korea Open, Saina was forced to retire. Sai Praneeth too made an early exit from the tournament.

London Olympic bronze medallist Saina was trailing 21-19, 18-21 and 1-8 against South Korea’s Kim Ga Eun before she was forced to retire.

In the men’s singles, Praneeth was forced to retire midway in his first-round match against Anders Antonsen of Denmark. Praneeth had lost the first game 9-21 and was trailing 7-11 in the second when he chose to retire because of injury.
