Juventus midfielder Emre Can has undergone a throat surgery to treat a thyroid nodule. The operation was successful, the Italian football club said Monday.

The German international, who joined Juventus from Liverpool over the summer, had been was diagnosed with a thyroid nodule earlier this month. Further specialist medical examinations in Germany confirmed the initial diagnosis, the club posted on its website.

“The club therefore reached the joint conclusion of proceeding with a surgical solution to the problem,” said the post.

It added: “The operation was carried out today (Monday) in Frankfurt by Prof. Vorlaender, in the presence of Dr. Claudio Rigo and was a complete success.”

The club said Can’s prognosis for the resumption of physical activity would be better assessed in the coming days.

The 24-year-old joined Juventus after four seasons with Liverpool FC, where he made over 150 appearances. He has signed a four-year contract with the club.

Before the diagnosis, Can played all games of Juventus, the Serie A defending champions.

But due to the injury, Can could not appear in the recent Serie A matches against Genoa and Empoli, as also in the UEFA Champions League group stage clash with Manchester United.

According to reports, he will miss Juve’s upcoming games against Cagliari, Manchester United, Milan, SPAL, Valencia, and also the international break.

Can has made 20 appearances for the Germany national team, winning the 2017 Confederations Cup.

Juve is the Frankfurt native’s fourth club of his senior career, having started out with Bayern Munich before moving to Bayer Leverkusen.
