Liverpool may have beaten Manchester City 2-1 in their International Champions Cup fixture on Thursday morning, but Reds boss Jurgen Klopp isn’t getting carried away with the results of the summer as he doesn’t think they mean anything when the regular season comes around.

“I’m pretty sure Pep was a little bit angry because he doesn’t like, or he hates (losing), like I do. I was not a bit happy about the Dortmund game, even when there was a lot more good situations than today, especially in the first half,” Klopp replied at his post-match press conference when asked if the game at the MetLife Stadium will have any bearing for the upcoming season.

Traditionally, pre-season was all about building up your fitness levels and trying new formations and players, but as commercial activities have taken over, most top European clubs travel to the United States or Asia in a bid to expand their fanbase.

“If you lose a game, you lose a game. How can you be happy? And if we win a game, that’s cool. That it was against Man City, we lost against Dortmund so what does that mean?”

Liverpool next take on arch-rival Manchester United in two day’s time before finishing their pre-season with fixtures against Italian Serie A sides Napoli and Inter Milan.

“We won against City, what does that mean? It’s pre-season, it’s really not important. The game for us was very important, but it is not a sign in the direction or whatever. It’s only a game we played and a lot of good moments which we can use and a lot of bad moments we can work on. That’s all, Klopp added.

After an excellent transfer window in which they have acquired  Naby Keita (transfer agreed last year, but player arrived this summer), Alisson Becker, Fabinho and Xherdan Shaqiri, Liverpool fans are on a high.

And results like these will only fuel expectations that a Premier League title tilt is on the cards for the 2018/18 season, but Klopp has smartly sought to tramper those hopes.
