Ireland vs India: Virat Kohli just a step away from scripting history

Virat Kohli

Indian cricket team skipper Virat Kohli is just a step away from scripting history in the Twenty20 cricket as India take on Ireland on Wednesday. Virat, who is also the third highest run-getter in men’s cricket, is just 17 runs shy from completing 2,000 runs in T20 Internationals.

Virat has scored 1,983 runs in 54 innings with an average of 50.84 and if he scores 17 runs in the first T20I match against Ireland, he will become the fastest batsman to achieve this feat. Currently, the record is under Brendon McCullum’s (2,140 runs) name, who is also the second highest run-scorer in T20Is. McCullum completed 2,000 runs in 66th T20I match. His New Zealand teammate Martin Guptill took 68 matches to achieve this feat. Martin Guptill (2,271 runs) is also the highest run-scorer in the men’s T20I cricket.

However, even if Virat Kohli will fail in the Irish capital from achieving this feat, he will have 11 more matches to reach the milestone and make a record.

Earlier, Indian women’s ODI skipper Mithali Raj completed 2,000 runs in T20I and became first ever Indian cricketer to do so.

If Virat, who is placed eighth in the ICC T20I Rankings among batsmen, scores 17 runs in Dublin on Wednesday, he will become second Indian player to score 2,000 runs and first Indian male cricketer to achieve this feat.

Virat, who is also popularly known as the ‘run machine’, is yet to hit a century in the shortest format of the game and today when Indian will face Irish cricket nation, he will be looking for that elusive ton.
