Punjab Kings will be under pressure to arrest their recent slide when they take on a confident Sunrisers Hyderabad in their IPL 2026 clash at the Rajiv Gandhi International Cricket Stadium in Hyderabad on Wednesday.

Punjab started the season strongly, winning six matches in a row, but have now lost their last two games. Those defeats have exposed some clear weaknesses that the team will want to fix quickly.

Even though they are still at the top of the table with 13 points from nine matches, the gap has narrowed. Teams like Royal Challengers Bengaluru, Sunrisers Hyderabad, Rajasthan Royals and Gujarat Titans are all close behind, just a point away.

Punjab’s recent struggles have come mainly from losing their rhythm. Their batting had been covering up for an inconsistent bowling attack earlier, but that is no longer the case. The top order has not been as reliable. Young players like Priyansh Arya, Prabhsimran Singh and Cooper Connolly have been aggressive, but at times that approach has led to early wickets, putting pressure on the rest of the batting.

The middle order has also struggled to build partnerships. Instead of steady contributions, they have often depended on individual performances, which has resulted in low totals and failed chases.

Bowling continues to be Punjab’s biggest concern. Even in matches they have won, their bowlers have allowed too many runs at key moments. Their lack of control, especially towards the end of innings, has made it difficult to close out games.

With the tournament moving into a more competitive phase, Punjab will need to improve their execution and stick to clearer plans, especially against a strong Hyderabad side on a pitch that usually favours batters.

Sunrisers Hyderabad, currently third on the table, will also be looking to bounce back after a seven-wicket loss to Kolkata Knight Riders ended their five-match winning run. Sunday’s defeat at home also cost the Men-in-Orange a chance to go top of the standings.

Their batting did not click in that game apart from contributions by Travis Head and Ishan Kishan. Head, however, has been in excellent form with back-to-back fifties. Abhishek Sharma has also been scoring runs, while Heinrich Klaasen has been consistent throughout the season.

With the ball, Hyderabad look like a balanced side. The return of captain Pat Cummins has bolstered the attack. Their pace bowlers have done well, especially in the final overs. Players like Eshan Malinga, Praful Hinge and Sakib Hussain have been effective at the death, helping Hyderabad close out innings strongly. Malinga, in particular, has impressed with his performances, showing the depth in the bowling unit, which has not depended on just one standout player.
