Five-time Indian Premier League (IPL) title winners’ Mumbai Indians’ decision to dethrone Rohit Sharma and appoint Hardik Pandya as the captain ahead of the 17th season of the cash-rich league, has been widely criticized by fans but the star all-rounder promised the team’s passionate fanbase that he will ensure a thrilling season.

Pandya, who led the Gujarat Titans to the IPL title in their inaugural season in 2022, and ended as runners-up in the next edition, left the Gujarat franchise after being bought back by his previous franchise in an all-cash deal late last year. Pandya was then named the captain of the Mumbai Indians’ franchise, replacing their most successful skipper Rohit, who led the side to their five IPL titles so far.

Reflecting on his journey as a cricketer, Pandya said he’s happy to have returned “home after a couple of years.

“Returning to Mumbai Indians feels like coming back to where it all began. I’m deeply thankful for the immense love and support from fans. It’s a blessing beyond words. From my journey as a young lad in Baroda to Mumbai, this city has taught me growth, instilling in me humility and resilience. The city’s love and teachings are invaluable to me, shaping me into the cricketer I am today. Mumbai always challenges you to be better and now with the IPL, I have returned home after two years,” he said.

“I seek the same backing from our fans to propel us towards victory. Rest assured, I’ll ensure a thrilling season that every supporter will relish. It’s a journey we’ll all enjoy together,” he added.

Hardik was also asked to talk about his first season with Mumbai Indians in 2015.

“Coming from Baroda, it was a life-changing experience for me when I remember the 2015 IPL. That year was pivotal in my career. Representing Mumbai Indians amidst seasoned players was a turning point for me. When you get a chance to play with such established players on such a big platform, your life changes,” he acknowledged.

“I was fortunate enough that I was able to contribute on a much larger scale to the knockout games. Bagging two ‘Man of the Match’ awards during crucial knockout games was surreal. It marked the beginning of an extraordinary journey for me, it’s a chapter I’ll always cherish,” he added.
