The debate on whether key Indian players should play in the upcoming season of Indian Premier League (IPL 2019) or not as the ICC World Cup 2019, which will be held in England and Wales, is scheduled for later this is not ready to die down.

The debate took a new turn with BCCI’s chief selector, MSK Prasad, saying that the 12th edition of IPL will benefit Indian players ahead of the fifty-over mega tournament. The upcoming season of IPL will kick-start on March 23. In the series opener, Chennai Super Kings will take on Royal Challengers Bangalore. On the other hand, ICC World Cup 2019 will begin on May 30. In the first match of the WC, hosts England will take on South Africa.

“I have a different view (on the IPL debate). IPL is an international tournament which offers so many complex pressure situations. Rather than sitting and training, you will have to go through so many pressure situations be it with the batting, bowling or fielding. This IPL offers a competitive atmosphere. If you see the example of 2013 and 2017 Champions Trophy, we did exceedingly well because we had IPL prior to that. It will only help our players which otherwise a normal bilateral series will definitely not offer. It is just four overs (for bowlers) but it is important how to keep themselves fit other than that,” MSK Prasad said during India Today’s panel discussion.

Earlier, Indian skipper Virat Kohli had said that the IPL performances will have “no influence” on the World Cup team selection. Kohli has even said that the speculation that IPL will affect WC selection is a “very, very radical analysis”.

“No, I don’t see the IPL having any influence on World Cup selection. I think that will be very, very radical sort of analysis,” Kohli had said on the eve of the first ODI against Australia.
