Former Indian opener Gautam Gambhir is set to lead Delhi Daredevils in the 11th edition of Indian Premier League.

Gambhir was the skipper of Kolkata Knight Riders for seven years. The Delhi lad had also led the Shah Rukh Khan-owned franchise in winning two IPL trophies. After not getting retained by KKR, Gautam had gone under the hammer on Saturday and was bought by DD.

The Delhi Daredevils was Gautam Gambhir’s first IPL franchise. The head coach of the team Ricky Ponting said that he will be captaining the team.

“We’ve had a few conversations with Gautam, who’d been looking to return to his first IPL franchise, and he’ll be captaining the DareDevils,” said Ponting, adding, “Indeed, we’re happy to have Gautam and he’ll deliver.”

“It’s hard to find fault with anything Gautam did at KKR. He’s won the IPL twice and brings with him a wealth of experience,” Ricky Ponting, the Daredevils’ head of cricket, said on Saturday evening.”

Earlier, in the second day of IPL auction, Indian pacer Jaydev Unadkat created a buzz on the second day of Indian Premier League mega auction by becoming the most expensive Indian player so far. Unadkat was brought by Rajasthan Royals for Rs. 11.50 crore.

Rajasthan Royals is back in IPL after the suspension of two years. Before RR brought Jaydev, Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR), Kings XI Punjab (KXIP) and Chennai Super Kings (CSK) were in a bidding war for the player.

Earlier, on the first day of the auction, Manish Pandey and Lokesh Rahul were the most expensive Indians as they were sold for identical price of Rs 11 crore.

Pandey was bought by Sunrisers Hyderabad while Punjab secured Rahul’s services.

England all-rounder Ben Stokes became the most expensive player at the IPL auction for the second year running when he was taken by Rajasthan for Rs 12.5 crore.

Surprisingly, Unadkat was more expensive than even star New Zealand fast bowler Trent Boult who was bought by Delhi Daredevils for a mere Rs 2.2 crore.
