Defending Wimbledon champion Andy Murray survived a scare against Italian player Fabio Fognini in the third-round and the home favourite paid tribute to the partisan crowd that supported him throughout the encounter.

The World No.1 uploaded a picture of himself with the caption: “Always a great feeling to make it to the second week of a slam. Atmosphere was awesome tonight, thanks for all the support #wimbledon."

The 28th-seeded Fognini was outclassed in the opening set, but came back strongly to win the second 6-4, before Murray recovered to close out the last two sets in a match that lasted over two and a half hours.
